With traditional Bike leasing, employers and employees are usually bound to a 36-month contract. A bicycle subscription is significantly more flexible: the terms are shorter (often cancellable monthly or for 6–12 months), and service (maintenance, repairs, insurance) is usually included in the fixed monthly price. A subscription is ideal for employees who want to try out a bike or only use it seasonally (e.g., in summer).
If the e-bike subscription is paid for by the employer in addition to the employee's regular salary, the benefit in kind from the private use of the e-bike is tax-free and exempt from social security contributions for the employee according to Section 3 No. 37 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG). Compared to leasing via salary sacrifice, the 0.25% tax on the benefit in kind is even waived. For the company, the subscription fees are fully tax-deductible as business expenses.
