Mobility budget & bike leasing explained. How does bike leasing work? What are the benefits of company bikes?

Key points:

Anyone who enjoys riding a bike, whether for work or for pleasure, can now use their mobility budget to lease a bike. NAVIT offers company bikes to employees to use for work and for private use.

Customized your personal dream bike. Tailor your bike with features that match your needs. With bike leasing, there is no brand, model, or dealer commitment. The personal favorite bike can simply be selected or put together on-site at one of over 5,000 participating dealers.

Payment by payroll. The leasing installments are paid monthly by the company (subsidy in the amount of the mobility budget) and the employee - via salary conversion. Thanks to tax incentives, employees can save up to 40% compared to cash purchases.

Services and insurance for bicycles. With bike leasing, you don't have to worry about theft, damage, or breakdowns of your bike. The leasing rate already includes insurance and a mobility guarantee that covers the whole of Europe.

These are the advantages of bike leasing

Bike leasing is an excellent benefit for employers to offer their employees. Companies increase the satisfaction of their employees with this incentive, which benefits their health, which in turn benefits the company. After all, people who ride a bicycle tend to stay healthy and are less likely to take sick leave.

Employees who cycle also travel in a more climate- and environmentally-friendly manner. This has an extremely positive effect on their personal CO2 footprint as well as that of the company. Cycling is an important component of the traffic turnaround, and every bicycle that replaces a car helps to free our cities from traffic jams and make them a bit more livable and sustainable.

Especially in big cities, parking spaces are rare and sometimes expensive. By helping their employees to switch from private cars or company cars to company bicycles, companies can significantly improve the local parking situation and even save costs by eliminating the need for parking spaces.

Financially, bicycle leasing is also worthwhile for employees. Employees save money compared to conventional bicycle purchases and benefit from all-around protection in the form of insurance and service. They only pay low monthly installments and private use is permitted. It is therefore worthwhile to opt for a higher-quality bicycle and it is also possible to purchase an e-bike or a cargo bike. So there is nothing standing in the way of buying your personal dream bike.

Last but not least, the above-mentioned advantages make one thing clear: company bike leasing has become one of the most popular employee benefits!

This is how NAVIT bike leasing for employees works

If you like to ride a bike and receive an NAVIT mobility budget from your employer, you now have the opportunity to convert the monthly credit into a company bike leasing contract.

Employees who receive a monthly NAVIT mobility budget can apply for a company bike lease in just a few minutes via the NAVIT app. For this purpose, NAVIT works together with its partner BusinessBike. Via the BusinessBike portal, users can register for a so-called Quick-Start. The Quick-Start is approved within one business day.

Employees select their personal dream bike, including accessories, from a dealer of their choice. With BusinessBike, employees can select their dealer of choice from over 5,000 different dealers throughout Germany. The dealer takes care of the quotation via the BusinessBike portal. Confirmation takes place contactless via cell phone or e-mail. If the favorite bike is in stock, it can be taken away right away.

With bike leasing, employees have a free choice of brand and model. This means they can choose either an e-bike, Dutch bike, mountain bike, cargo bike, pedelec, or racing bike.

Employees can use the leased company bike both for their commute to work and for all private journeys.

The term of the bike leasing contract is 36 months. The monthly leasing installments are converted from the gross salary via the so-called salary conversion. The employer pays the amount corresponding to the mobility budget.

How does salary conversion work?

In the case of salary conversion, the employee waives a small part of his/her monthly salary, which is converted into the leasing rate. During the leasing period of 36 months, the leasing bike is made available - for business and private use. Since it is a non-cash benefit, tax is paid monthly on 1% of a quarter of the list price (RRP), rounded down to a full 100 euros.

Bike leasing and the issue of taxes

Bike leasing via the employer is tax-advantaged. Since the company bike represents "wages in kind", taxation is carried out via salary conversion via the employee's wages. This reduces the calculation basis for taxes and social security contributions for both the employer and the employee, with the effect that both benefit financially.

If the employee receives the company bike as a salary supplement, the employer pays the leasing installments and can claim them as operating costs. For employees, the company bike is thus tax-free. In both cases, companies and employees receive tax benefits with bike leasing. This makes company bike leasing attractive.
